For a few of the clients I've taken care of, we have had some problems with tape allergies. This has caused a great amount of discomfort for them after their babies are born. So, I am on a quest to find the perfect alternative. And it's been kind of hard.
I found one site that I am getting a free sample from. I'll have to let you all know how that works. I've also heard that tegaderm makes some good products. The best idea I've had so far is actually using a wrap that sticks to itself. It is not a tape and doesn't irritate.
So here's my advice for those who are allergic for tape, but need an iv or epidural. The puncture site itself needs to be sterile. So when they put the bandage on, make sure they cover it with sterile 4x4's and use as little tape as possible to hold those in place. So what you'll have is the area where the needle is place, then 4X4's on top then the tape that holds them down. This at least reduces the amount of skin that comes in contact with the tape.
For keeping the actually tubing in place, I would use this wrap that sticks to itself for an iv. This could also be used for the epidural, but you would have to have your torso wrapped. I'm not sure how comfortable this would be. I would love to try it sometime to see, though.
For now, I think I'm going to experiment with this wrap because it does not have any adhesive. This may be another one that I let you all know.
